A 13th-century Catalan farmhouse tucked in the heart of Collserola Natural Park, just 20 minutes from Barcelona. Can Borrell is the kind of place you go for a proper calçotada in season — unlimited spring onions grilled over oak embers, romesco sauce, and grilled meats — all eaten in a rustic stone dining room that feels centuries away from city life. The Rovira brothers run the kitchen with four wood-fired grills, and the setting makes it worth the trip on its own.
A 13th-century farmhouse in Collserola where oak-ember grills and unlimited calçots make the ultimate Catalan winter lunch.
Book ahead for calçotada season (Nov–Apr) and arrive early to hike the Collserola trails before lunch — weekends get packed and service can slow down.
Wood-fired Catalan tradition in a 13th-century farmhouse
Can Borrell is the kind of place you plan a whole day around. You drive up through Collserola Natural Park — or take the FGC to Sant Cugat and walk the forest track — and arrive at a 13th-century stone farmhouse that feels completely removed from Barcelona. The Rovira brothers have been running the kitchen for years, and the heart of the operation is their four oak-ember grills, where everything from calçots to lamb chops gets that unmistakable wood-fired character.
If you're coming between November and April, go for the calçotada menu. You get unlimited calçots grilled over open fire, romesco sauce, mongetes amb cansalada, and grilled meats — it's messy, communal, and exactly what a Catalan winter lunch should be. The rest of the year, the à la carte leans on grilled meats and seasonal vegetables, all cooked over the same embers. There are 15 set menus ranging from barbecue to children's options, which makes it a go-to for large family gatherings, weddings, and communions.
It's not a fine-dining experience, and that's the point. Some reviewers have had off days — cold calçots or slow service when the place is packed — so manage your expectations for peak weekends. But the setting is genuinely magical, the food is honest and generous, and if you pair it with a morning hike through Collserola, it's one of the best day-trips you can do from Barcelona.
