Blue Libelle is Munich's answer to a Mediterranean wine bar experience without leaving the city. Located in Hans-Sachs-Straße, this spot transforms the former Afghan restaurant Bamyam Narges into a sun-bleached escape with blue tiles, rustic wood, and ethnic house beats that make you feel like you're sipping natural wine in Barcelona's Barceloneta. The kitchen, led by Kaan Erbatu (ex-Heart, Pescheria, Schmock), serves up Mediterranean-inspired sharing plates alongside a carefully curated list of natural and biodynamic wines from small producers across Europe.
Mediterranean Escape in Munich
Blue Libelle feels like a secret Mediterranean getaway tucked away in Munich's Ludwigsvorstadt. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by blue ceramic tiles, hand-painted walls, and the scent of sandalwood that transports you straight to a Greek island or Barcelona's waterfront. The space is intimate and candlelit, perfect for a romantic evening or catching up with friends over carefully selected natural wines.
The wine program is the real star here. Owners Maximilian Ergert, Robert Eibel, and Ayoub Azzabi have curated an impressive list focusing on natural, biodynamic, and orange wines from small producers across Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and even Czech Republic and Croatia. Don't be intimidated by wines that look like cloudy apple juice - the Vin Naturel "Els Bassots" from Spanish cult winemaker Escoda Sanahuja pairs beautifully with the fried gambas and calamari, creating that magical moment when you close your eyes and suddenly feel like you're on the Mediterranean coast.
The food is equally thoughtful, with a Mediterranean-influenced menu designed for sharing. The Beluga lentil salad with beets, almonds, and berries is a standout vegetarian option, while the neapolitan-style pizzas are handled by Sicilian pizzaiolo Giacomo. Chef Kaan Erbatu brings fine dining sensibilities to accessible sharing plates. It's not the cheapest spot, but the quality of both wine and food justifies the price. Come here for the atmosphere, stay for the wine discoveries.
