Solid neighborhood coffee spot with house-roasted beans and great cake
Back to Black on Van Hallstraat is one of those Amsterdam West spots that locals genuinely love. The coffee is their specialty—properly roasted in-house and consistently well-extracted. I've had some of the best cappuccinos here, served in stylish glasses that make the experience feel a notch above the average café.
The homemade cakes are a major highlight. The carrot cake is particularly good—moist, well-spiced, and not overly sweet. They also do a decent apple pie and offer toasted sandwiches for a quick lunch. The space is cozy with a relaxed vibe, though it can get crowded during peak hours. Note that laptops are only allowed on weekdays and in limited numbers; weekends are laptop-free to keep the atmosphere social.
It's not a place to linger for hours with a laptop, but for a proper coffee break or a sweet treat with friends, it's a reliable choice in a neighborhood that's seen a lot of new café openings. The outdoor seating is a bonus in warmer weather.

Back to Black, situé rue Van Hallstraat dans l'ouest d'Amsterdam, est l'un de ces cafés que les habitants du quartier adorent vraiment. Le café est leur spécialité : torréfié sur place et toujours bien préparé. J'y ai goûté certains des meilleurs cappuccinos d'Amsterdam, servis dans de jolis verres qui donnent une touche d'élégance à l'expérience.
Les gâteaux faits maison sont un vrai point fort. Le gâteau aux carottes est particulièrement réussi : moelleux, bien épicé et pas trop sucré. Ils proposent aussi une bonne tarte aux pommes et des sandwichs grillés pour un déjeuner rapide. L'ambiance est chaleureuse et décontractée, même si ça peut vite se remplir aux heures de pointe. Notez que les ordinateurs portables sont seulement autorisés en semaine, en nombre limité ; le week-end, ils sont interdits pour favoriser les échanges entre clients.
Ce n'est pas l'endroit idéal pour travailler pendant des heures avec son ordinateur, mais pour un bon café ou une gourmandise entre amis, c'est un choix fiable dans un quartier qui a vu ouvrir beaucoup de nouveaux cafés ces dernières années. La terrasse est un vrai plus quand il fait beau.
